Richard M Ibberson

Director - Neutron Technologies Division

Richard Ibberson received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Reading, U.K., in 1993 while working at the ISIS Spallation Neutron Source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, as an instrument scientist in the Crystallography Group.  His research interests include application of high-resolution neutron and X-ray powder diffraction in the study of molecular crystals, including phase transition studies and structure determination, and in the structure-property and processing relations in dielectric oxide ceramics.  Richard moved to the U.S. in 2009 and served as Group Leader for Research Facility Operations at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Center for Neutron Research and held a joint appointment as Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Maryland.  In 2015, he joined ORNL’s Neutron Sciences Directorate as Director of Chemical and Engineering Materials Division and has held positions as Director of Neutron Scattering Division, Technical Project Manager in Neutron Technologies Division, and Section Head for SNS Beamline Operations before taking his present role in Neutron Technologies Division in February 2023.
