Dr. Yingrui Shang's research interests focus on computational materials science with synergy of numerical modeling and polymer science. In his works the property-structure relations of polymer and composite systems are studied with molecular dynamics simulation. The real time X-ray and neutron scattering measurements are employed to reveal the influence of structural factors. The objectives of this study include the development of an ab init large scale structure model benchmarked with experimental results. Such models will be utilized as digital twins for virtual design of experiments or generating training data for AI models in predicting material properties with structures. He is also responsible for the software development of drtSANS and other software projects for small angle neutron scattering at ORNL.

Dr. Shang graduated from University of Massachusetts at Lowell with his Ph.D. in polymer engineering then joined Prof. Simon Billinge's research group as a Postdoctoral Scientist at Columbia University. After that he was appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Polymer Science at Tianjin University, Tianjin China. He joined the SANS group as a Computational Instrument Scientist at ORNL in 2021.
