Quantum Materials

Quantum materials exhibit unusual magnetic and electrical properties that go beyond classical physical limitations and serve as the foundation for applications in quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and energy-efficient technologies. These materials include both inorganic and organic substances that are either naturally suitable or can be tailored to display exotic quantum and topological properties

Quantum materials research at the Spallation Neutron Source and the High Flux Isotope Reactor focuses on:

  • Exploring novel quantum states to expand our current understanding of quantum matters.
  • Understanding and controlling complex atomic- and subatomic-level interactions that govern the magnetic and electrical properties of materials.
  • Designing and tailoring magnetic and electrical properties in quantum materials.
  • Detecting the responses of quantum materials to out-of-equilibrium and/or extreme conditions
