Amy Jones

Amy Jones is the Group Leader for Instrument Engineering for the Neutron Technologies Division. She supports both the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Amy’s guidance, experience, and leadership has greatly contributed to cutting-edge advances in the design and performance of neutron scattering instruments at SNS and HFIR. She and her group provide top level engineering and design support for Scientific Associates and neutron scattering users. They also provide support for major construction projects including the newly constructed VENUS instrument, the HFIR Beryllium Reflector Replacement, as well as numerous instrument improvement initiatives. Amy’s colleagues praise her for her positive, encouraging spirit and for always leading by example and demonstrating a commitment to inclusion, integrity, and excellence.

Amy chose the engineering field because it allowed her to make a career out of problem-solving, and working at a national laboratory, she says, has given her the opportunity to work on an endless supply of challenging puzzles. Outside of work, Amy enjoys traveling and spending time with family, making core memories on adventures to exciting new places and experiences with her husband and two kids.

I strongly believe that having determination and a complete unwillingness to give up, as well as always being firm in purpose in the face of adversity have been critical to achieving success in both my career and life in general.

As a strong introvert with a decisive personality, learning to balance the needs of the group against the needs of individuals, as well as the needs of our customers, has been challenging and has forced me to expand how I communicate and think about problem solving.

Bringing a collection of individuals together, watching them become a high functioning team, and having the opportunity to support the growth of both groups and individuals has been rewarding in ways I did not anticipate.”
